THINGS TO EXPECT:

SUMMER HEAT STRESS will weaken all plants as the intensity and duration of hot weather persists. Desiccation (browning, at the tips, edges and between veins of leaves) and sun- burn (bronzing of sun-exposed leaves & smooth bark surfaces) will became more severe an water-stressed and marginally adapted plants.

IRON CHLOROSIS may be worsened by excessive, or deficient soil moisture.

FLEA BEETLES cause irregular brown markings and noticeable thinning of Dichondra.

PALM FLOWER CATERPILLARS (Palm Budworms) are feeding on the blossoms of some fan palms. Infestations of these cream-colored larva, which may exceed an inch in length, may not be evident until maturing worms drop to the ground and become a nuisance – even invading homes. Feeding damage to palms is a little consequence

ROOT ROTS are often induced by over-wet soils.

SOUR FRUIT BEETLES in ripening figs. Promptly pick ripe figs and discard rotting fruit.

FUNGUS DISEASE IN LAWNS are most infectious in warm, wet grass. Thick thatches, excessive watering frequencies and night watering increase fungus disease potential.

TOADSTOOLS & SLIME FUNGI increase around the landscape with the warm wetness.

THINGS TO DO:

IRRIGATE TO MAINTAIN OPTIMUM ROOT ZONE MOISTURE will minimize hot weather stress of plants. Proper watering is particularly critical now.

REPLENISH DEPLETED SOIL FERTILITY with a mild fertilization-- it'll help boost the vigor of summer - weary plants.

MINIMIZE DURATION OF WET GRASS to reduce chances of lawn disease infestation. Water during the morning and no more frequently than necessary. Be alert to disease outbreak in thick thatches. Promptly and thoroughly treat infected spots with prescribed fungices.

SUMMER FALLOW VEGETABLE GARDENS to control nematodes. Tilling up the soil and keeping it as dry during July and August is a practical control of these pests.

TREAT PALMS to prevent Bud Rot. Apply Bardeaux Mixture (2 tablespoons/pint of water).
