THINGS TO EXPECT:
PREMATURE LEAF DROP as day length shortens, particularly on shallow watered and growth stressed plants. Both deciduous and evergreens are affected.
BURSTING OF ORANGES, TANGERINES & POMEGRANATES results when fruits enlarge faster than sunburned or hot weather-dried rinds can stretch.
FALL BLOOM OF CITRUS sometimes occurs, and most often on growth-stressed trees.
DAMPING-OFF OF PETUNIAS and other bedding plants. Don't keep beds too wet. Recommended fungicide provides fair control. Infection is most likely in repeatedly planted flower beds.
MESOPHYLL COLLAPSE is a sudden wilt and drying of citrus leaves provoked by abrupt weather changes. East and north sides of grapefruit, lemon and orange trees are most affected.
PECAN APHID INFESTATIONS cause leaves to become sticky and glisten in the sunlight. No control is recommended unless the drippage mess is intolerable.
WORMS IN VEGETABLE GARDENS keep a close vigil and control promptly.

THINGS TO DO:
PLANT WINTER – HARDY, CONTAINERED TREES, SHRUBS S VINES. Freeze tender plants are best planted next March and April. Firm soil well around rootballs.
PLANT FLOWERS for fall, winter & spring bloom, seeds, bedding plants or bulbs.
PLANT VEGETABLES, except for freeze-tender cucurbits, sweet corn, melons, squash, etc.
THIN VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS soon after they emerge to avoid crowding.
OVERSEED BERMUDAGRASS LAWNS WITH WINTERGRASS from mid October until mid November.
PRE-EMERGENCE HERBIClDES FOR WINTER WEED CONTROL can be applied to soil surfaces from late October through November. But, don't apply where seeds are to be planted.
CUT BACK ON WATERING FREQUENCIES to minimize risk of root rots and to allow dormancy to occur and harden cold-tender plants.
PINCH OFF EXCESSIVE SIDE BUDS FROM CHRYSANTHEMUMS to allow the remaining terminal buds to develop larger flowers.
DON'T STUB-PRUNE MULBERRY TREES. This ill-advised practice ought to be discouraged.
POSTPONE EXTENSIVE PRUNING of trees and shrubs until late January, early February.
